Removing transmission

Hi all, I am trying to drop the transmission on my range rover classic 300 tdi. I removed all bolts but have been struggling to separate the bellhousing and after more than 5 hours of trying everything from different heights and wiggling, pry bar etc I can't seem to get more than 1/2 inch of space. Is there a trick to doing this ? Thank you!

No trick (that I know of), if all the bolts are undone on the bell the main shaft should slide out of the clutch no problem.
I've not done a RRC but have done this a few times recently on a defender 300tdi.
Do you need the starter motor off on the RRC, you don't on the Defender.

Have you taken the transfer box off ?

Yes transfer box is off. It must be binding on something. I recently installed a new pilot bushing which may be too tight. Maybe it's getting stuck there. Will try to pull it out with some ratchet straps for leverage.

Nothing for it to get stuck in really ...

The gearchange mechanism isn't hitting somethging. I have to lower mine about 1" at the back to miss the seatbox.

I checked several times. It's not hitting anything, plenty of clearance and all bolts are removed. I think it's probably a mix of slight clutch misalignment and too tight pilot bearing. I recently installed a new clutch and pilot bearing and had a difficult time connecting the bellhousing back so suspect some binding there. Taking it off to fix a leaking main seal.

If you're getting only a 1/2" gap between the bellhousing the spigot bush might be stuck on your input shaft, having come out of the crank. That is catching on the front face of the clutch disk. I had this issue before.

This makes alot of sense. Maybe the best way is to use the space I have to un bolt the clutch housing by rotating the engine. Is this how you solved it?

I was fortunate that my bellhousing already had a hole in it (for an unknown reason), where I could undo the pressure plate bolts.
Hopefully you can squeeze a spanner through the gap that you have.

On my D1 300 tdi there were a fair amount of studs - maybe it wants to come out more parallel - is it a half inch all round or just at the bottom / top ?

I positioned it so that It's floating on the studs. It's the shaft that is getting stuck. Likely issue is what @rangieman mentioned. Unfortunately I only have about an inch of space so can't fit even a small spanner.
