I would like to remove all the soundproofing off the transmission tunnel area and repaint to original colour. Not sure what it's been glued on with but it looks tricky to remove. I've stuck the carpet back down for now until I can tackle it properly.

Anyone tried to remove this stuff? any suggestions?

Thanks, I'll try wd40 - hadn't thought of that!
replacing would be a last resort - still toying with leaving it on and carpet covering. I just prefer the 'utilitarian look' of painted metal!

Finally got round to this grim job!

I want to restore the interior back to bare painted metal and as she's hopefully going to have a gavanised bulkhead fitted in the next few weeks, I thought i'b better crack on so all can be painted at the same time. I've bought some new aluminium floor plates so not worried about cleaning the current ones.

I've detailed some before and after pictures having already ripped out the carpet. The glue stuff was just like tar. Only petrol and white spirit would shift it. In total it took 10 hours just to do the seat box and transmission / bell housing cover and used half a gallon of petrol and 2.5 litres of white spirit, plus a selection of wire brushes and coarse sanding pads and god on speed dial! I also managed to salvage the warning plate on the bulkhead which can now go on the new bulkhead when fitted.

The metalwork was in surprisingly good condition underneath.
Next Sunday's job is to fit in a new aluminium too box under the passenger side of the seat box.
