Remotes will not sync

Fitted new air con condenser last night. when finished go to lock car, remote not working!! Other remote batteries flat

As I just got new batteries and have been getting fob battery low message I swapped out batteries in both remotes, but whatever I try I cannot sync the remotes.

Still getting fob battery low message on both remotes, so off to Tesco bought 2 more still same message, connectors in battery compartment clean.

Mine is a 97my registered in Oct 96, I followed the procedure in the glovebox manual of unlocking with key then putting key in ignition but no joy. Ive also tried unlocking then pressing unlock and locking and pressing lock with no joy

I seem to have read somewhere that if the low battery message comes on the keys will not sync, is this correct?

I'm locking with key at the moment but I'm sure if things go tits up somewhere it will be when wife drives it and is miles away

Just tried again unlock with key

In ignition position 2 for 30 secs and remote 1 works woo hoo.

But

Power locking has popped the rod of the key lock, so cant do the other or use key, well I know what i'll be doing at lunchtime now

Tried to sync the other remote, Number 2, no matter what I do it will not sync. The led comes on

Any ideas??
