Hi there,
I have a series 3 LR and the steering seems really heavy. Its on Mud Plugga 7.50 R16 tyres which I dont suppose helps and so I'm looking to get a new set of all terrains put on - Ive been quoted £74 each for Fedima's. If this doesnt help much, I just wondered if anyone knew what I could do to make it less heavy as my wife cant park the thing at the moment. When driving it isnt that bad, but trying to manouvre off the driveway or at slow speed is tough - any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Also, I'm considering a new chassis and bulkhead..any ideas on where I could get these and likley costs etc would be fab.
Thanks.

few years ago nearby farm had a series 3 lwb ex leccy board with a pto winch that had heavy steering , local garage did something to steering box which made it a lot lighter... i think it was adjustment of something internal...maybe shims were involved, but it was a long time ago

Lots of things can cause heavy steering - badly adjusted/poorly lubricated steering box, stiff relay, stiff balljoints, stiff swivels. Jack up the front wheels and have a feel - it should move fairly easily with both wheels off the ground. The steering on a series will always be a bit heavy, just think of it as a good upper body workout.

Check steering over as Oxides says.
My present series 3 had really heavy steering when I first got it, checked steering over and all was ok, so did 2 things which sorted it.
Moved spare from bonnet to swing away carrier, that helped a bit.
Also a previous owner had fitted a smaller steering wheel, so replaced it with a standard series 3 one, that finnally sorted it, it also sorted out the problem of the indicators not self cancelling.

Great - that's good to know - Cheers.

From what I can remember when I had my S3 (lwb diesel)the steering was pretty heavy, but mine had 9.00 x 16 tyres on it, the lock was also rubbish (down to the big tyres). All you can do is make sure everything that should be greased is greased, particulary track rod ends. Check the steering box, someone might have adjusted it too tight.

Nigel.
