Hi,

My spare wheel is in the back of my defender 90 van back I need more space in the back so I wanna put it on the rear door. But I have checker llate on the door so I'm not sure if the original mounts are still there. Is it mounted as standard on the back door? And how difficult is it to put a swing away carrier on it. Any ideas guys?

Cheers

It can be mounted on the back door as standard but you'd prob have to buy at wheel mount for it, however it will probably **** your back door eventually.

Im planning on a carrier for mine as I think its the best solution, not fitted one yet so cant advise but im sure someone here will. Id of thought it was just a few holes drilled and it bolts on.

Stick it on the bonnet, never had an issue with mine, motorways, greenlanes, 4x4 courses, not budged an inch, bonnet still straight ( well apart from the boot size dents when have stuck me foot too far over  )

Other than that buy a bracket for the back door, it mounts from the inside through the door btw, so you ' may ' have to drill some holes, although i imagine they're already there behind the chequer plate.

I've got a rear door mount kicking about here - you can have it for a few beer tokens plus postage (although it'll probably cost a bit to post!)

I fitted a swing-away carrier as with a bigger wheel / tyre combination, I was worried the back door was gonna break. They're pretty easy to fit - as said, just a few holes to drill, a few nuts and bolts to do up. It probably took an hour or two.

We could always try the courier service... Thanks for the offer. I think I'll go for the swing away but I'm a little skint at the moment so. It's gonna have to be on the door. Does having it mounted on the bonnet reduce your vision a fair bit? Also does it get in the way when your working under the bonnet... So you can't lift it up to the windscreen.

A tad o/t, but how easy are the swing away carriers to remove?...reason I ask, I'm after a bike rack that goes on the towbar, but most dnt allow for a spare wheel to be there, so want something quick release as such.

Is it's just a case of whipping it off with a catch? Or do you need a socket set etc?

you would need a tools

the other option is a bike rack that attaches to the spare wheel or the holder

Socket set job.

Why not get a swing away carrier and a bike rack that then fits over the spare wheel?

Vision wise, yes it does, but i've never hit anything :D

The only reason i did it was because i wanted the back door for jerrycans, so the wheel had to go somewhere else, ie the bonnet. The bonnet itself has a ladder section underneath, you have to cut one section out and re weld further back.
As for opening the bonnet, no problems at all although the weight is alot more so i usually remove the wheel if i'm working on the engine it for any length of time to relieve stress on the bonnet so it doesn't twist.

I did a photo write up on my little thread i have going, the link is in my sig, page 3 or 4 i think, take a look, i used the original rear door mount as well, so nothing wasted, cost me less than a tenner to do it ( had to buy the rubber bumpers which are fixed to the bonnet to keep the wheel steady )

Ok...thanks guys for your super fast replies!

A roof rack is a no no, cos I don't fancy scratching my bike trying to get it up there!

I did contemplate going the spare wheel carrier and bike rack route, but I want to put it on the back of my Disco too, but there is no spare wheel. No worries though...I'll put my thinking cap on.

Thanks again :)

What ya could do is replace the bolts with pip pins. It wouldn't be very safe so you would probably have to secure it with a chain to put off those theiving bastards. But that would make it a 5 second job to remove...

Any o these would work... http://www.prifast.co.uk/
