Releasing tension on water pump belt - 96 2.5TD

Have a 96 2.5TD p38 and struggling to get the belt off the water pump.

I was unscrewing this bolt you see sticking out thinking that was it and now it's stuck there, it turns either way no problem just won't screw back in or come out.

Still can't get the belt loose, don't know what i'm doing :(

 
What have / am I doing wrong here? Got the fan and stat out but this is puzzling me.
 
Why start 2 threads one same issue?
Wammers already told you in the other one, and you decide to unscrew a pulley:confused: you won't get that back in easily with tension on belt
 
He went offline and I wanted to start a thread title specifically to this issue. I didnt understand what he was telling me to do. I can't see any way of getting the belt off. How do I remove it?

I'm a long way from being a mechanic so need a full explanation to help me out. Thanks
 
So I got the belt off, now the pulley wont come off. I took the 4 small bolts out, am I missing something?

Put a bar in on top of the tensioner from right to left and press down at right to lever the spring up and the tensioner over centre.
 
got the belt off, next problem, the pulley won't come off the pump. I took the 4 short bolts out, is it just stuck on and need a sharp knock?

ah :) I do appreciate the help. Now the pulley is stuck on, any tips or am I missing something? I assumed it was just the 4 bolts and it popped off?
 
okay, got it off and the pump out, it looks fine though.. here is some pics, there is a wee hairline crack but no breaks:







So the thermostat opens and closes, the pump looks fine?? Any way of checking the rad as it's the last option before giving up and accepting the head has gone :(
 
If it is the head, that's beyond me and the garage has quoted 1500-2000 to do that lol, what do you think I can sell it for as is? It's a 96 2.5TD 139k miles, good condition otherwise but possible head failure. Tax and test. Rears tinted, bodywork in good nic. Cheers
 
what you need to do is see if you can turn the plastic part of the pump whilst holding the shaft still. There is more than one crack I can see in your photo.

RAD should be quite light if it feels heavy, it may be silted up, you also need to do the marble test. Put a marble or a marble sized stone into one pipe of the RAD, tilt it and see if it can be made to come out of the other pipe, if it does, the RAD is fecked.

I bought one like that for €900 to scrap for parts, they are pricy in France, doubt you'd get that much in the UK:(
 
If the head is fecked, the best route is a secondhand engine, the can be picked up in a Vauxhall Omega for not a lot but a garage my not be prepared to do the swap.

You will need certain fancy tools to re time the cam shaft and angle tighten the head but other than that pretty simple.
