As some of you may be aware my 110 had a small fire (link) and will be off the road for some time while I rebuild it. In the mean time I will hopefully be driving my mums TD5 90 which has been laid up in the garage for the last 5 years. It gets a full service and hopefully an MOT this week to get it back on the road. Currently however it has no stereo fitted. I think I am am happy with how to wire it although mine was a 300tdi loom not a td5 I am assuming there is not a huge difference what is needed to connect it?

My main issue is the stereo I had fitted in the 110 has now been discontinued (Pioneer MVH-X580BT) and they seem to make the specs willfully difficult to understand when trying to compare online.
My requirements are:
  • bluetooth phone connection for 2x iphones
  • external microphone
  • bluetooth connection for playing music (radio apps, spotify, etc)
Not essential but preferred requirement:
  • a CD player for mum when I give the vehicle back to her
Can anyone recommend me a stereo which fulfils the spec list above?
I would also consider a double din as long as it has the above spec and apple carplay.

I found a new old stock unused Alpine unit on flea bay last year, it was a few years old and came with the correct lead to fit to my vehicle. Was only £30 and identical to the units fitted to defenders as an upgrade when bought new. But has the benefit of not requiring a code to be entered every time the battery is disconnected. Operating Manuals with wiring diagrams etc are freely available on line direct from Alpine. Adaptor leads to fit between the unit and the defender loom are also readily available on the bay for a few quid. Well worth an hour searching the bay -----

Or go completely radio-less and but a JBL Extreme speaker. It fits beautifully behind a cubby box, links directly to any mobile via bluetooth enabling wire-free listening to every music/radio station in the world, plus onto your preferred music app [Deezer etc] and clear hands free calls. And...unlike a Land Rover, it's waterproof:)

A quick search and those can be got for well under £200. Even Currys doing them for £170 - ish.

What is the mic like on those, I know I am coming form a tdi engine so more of an issue but the reason I have external mic as a requirement is on my previous trial and error attempts the general noise of the vehicle made it difficult to use the phone without a proper directional external mic.

Use the mic on the phone, the speaker provides the output

That is what I started with originally, but people could not hear me well enough. That was my main reason for choosing the Pioneer MVH-X580BT as it included an external mic rather than relying on the phone microphone.
