Dear All
If anyone installed a rebuilt gearbox in his defender, please can you tell if you can now change up first to second, and second to third quickly with high rev (without any feeling of grind/crunch/blocking) ?

Concerns Defender TD5 90 with R380 gearbox suffix L with MTF94 oil

Many thanks !
Julien

something you shouldnt be doing till baulk rings have run in at least

not when new but the baulk rings wear to become that way, they arent the best baulk rings and wont shift as your car might,so it depends what your expecting you certainly should be able to change smoothly with normal driving

When my rebuilt box went in it was much like yours, you just have to be kind and take a little time on changes. They are not slick shift box's. After about 50000km mine is now nice and smooth. After another 500km or so do change the oil. I know many makers/service people say that gearbox's are filled for life and just need a level check but a change will help with box life and keep it smooth. I change mine every couple of years.

The syn difflock gearbox oil is very very good in the 380.

Hi Lynall
You mean it's better than the LR-MTF94 ? Do you have please a reference for the syn difflock gearbox oil ? Merci !

Scroll down on the link to read the guff, its bloody expensive but transformed the 380 in my td5.
Many thanks !
What was in yours before the Difflock Evol1 ? MTF94 from dealer or another oil ? So we can compare.
Another question : do you know if Difflock Evol1 is 75W-80W viscosity ? because I don't want it to harm the gearbox pump.

Very Many thanks ;-)

Hi
Yes. When I shift gears slowly and with low rev. Everything is fine. I have to decompose well also passing by neutral. Please see vidéo attached. Tell me please if this is a normal way of shifting for a defender. Sorry for the noise of the wipers. Many Thanks ;-)

hi tottot

when I shift gently and slowly without high reving it, Everything is ok. I have to decompose well passing by neutral. Please see vidéo Link below. Is this a normal way for shifting gears in a defender ? Thanks a lot !

To be honest I have no idea as I bought the car second hand, the gearbox was terrible, but on a recoomendation I stuck the difflock oil in and it was transformed.
In fact I had complained about the gearbox, then changed the oil for the difflock stuff, then took the car back for a head gasket (warranty) and they said the gearbox was one of the best that had ever driven!

Ps I pretty much mercilessly thrashed that car all over the place for 5 years and 50k, it is still on the road!
