Hello. A bit of help wanted

Just started work on my hedgerow find Landy Defender, when i got it the carbs were missing, they have now been found but they are in bits, The carbs are SU HIF 44, they are now cleaned up and ready to rebuild, not having worked on the hif carbs before i have a couple of questions that i hope someone can answer. I have looked in all my Rover V8 books and Google and cant find answers i need.

As the carbs are handed left and right the main jet are also handed one being black the other white, i need to find out what carbs the white and black jets fit. The other question is in relation to the bio metal assembly fitted to the main jet, i need to find the adjustment screw setting for this assembly.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks Terry

The carbs are handed so throttle linkage is the same side.
Not heard of the jets issue. Are they the same size? should have a number stamped in them.

You may find something helpful in the attached doc.

Thanks for the pdf, its answered my question on the bia metal assembly but not the jet problem, i am assuming that one of the jets is a different size they have no visable markings to indicate jet size so i dont know if say the black jet is for the rignt hand or left hand carb, i do know from passed dealings with other types of carbs that different coloured jets were different sizes.
Cheers Terry

It wouldn't be logical to have different jet sizes on each carb as it would screw up fuelling. The needles are the same in each one.
There may be better info online if you search for Rover SD1 V8 threads as they had the same carbs.
If you're buying kits or gaskets I'd suggest going to Burlen for genuine stuff. There are a lot of spurious parts available and with the modern E5 and E10 bio petrol the ethanol can eat into cheap materials.

Thanks, i have looked at rover sd1 Forums and not found much i also have a Layland SD1 works manual and not much in that either, i recall reading that the |V8 carbs are marked left and right because the jetting was different but cant remember where i
found it. I hear what you say on the jet sizing but why do they define the carbs as left and right, i have a Triumph GT6 the twin carbs on that are not handed. I have already got the carb kits from Turner Carbs did not know about Burlin. Thanks for your imput on the problem it all helps .

From looking at a spare pair of carbs that I have i may have arrived at a solution, but I'm not fully sure.
The bottom of the float chamber has a pizza slice shaped depression in the bottom plate. In this, the bottom of the jet holder is situated. The bottom of each jet is orientated that fuel is sucked from the rear of each carburettor.
So maybe there's a left and a right jet holder.
Unless you're doing serious off reading I don't think the carbs will care, as the fuel is being sourced from the very bottom of each float chamber.
