Rear window roof switch

Hello All!

HELP again please...
I made the mistake of using the loely weather as an excuse to fit my ebay acquired softback for our TD4 3-dr.
All was going well (minor glitch with missing stud) installed folded forward under roof bars (just) then back for hood-up overnight...
Rear Door window is stuck down! ... had been working fine prior.
I recalled there was some sensing / switch in the rear locks and the manual states the window is inhibited if hardtop removed or if softtop removed or just open...
Does anyone know how this works? had a breif look in the side panels to try and locate a switch at eh base of the locks but nothing visible - I can only assume that one side must earth to other to enable detction of hood open or closed but could see no sign...
Searched loads of threads to no avail and now it outside with a tarp over as rain is coming.

The Switch, which needs to be depressed, is half way up the angled pillar on the offside. Small, Black/Grey square button... When pressed down window will operate.

I must have forgot it was a landorver and over complicated the problem last night... in the cool light of day (and the answer of course) it is simple LR engineering!

I've just ordered a Soft Back for my FL, are they easy to fit - and what is the Red Key that is always mentioned or asked about on ebay?

The red key is essentially a triangular socket key that is used to release the rear corners - fitting is pretty easy once you have done one once but can be a bit of a mare to get your head round. I am assuming that yours comes with instructions??? give me a shout if not and I can photocopy mine and put em the post for you. Probably the fiddliest bit is getting the rear side windows in and out of the plastic runners every time you want to take the roof down - if the weather is warm and they are pliable its OK but if its a bit chilly (like in the evening when you are putting the roof back up!) then its best to use an extra pair of hands to keep it in the plastic runners as you pull it up the runner)

If you have never put a soft top on before it may be worth having a quick nosey at your local dealer if they have one in stock to see how they should be fitted.

Hi Steve,

My experience was much as Outlander has described with one additional issue on mine: the rear corner latch where the hardtop has the twist handles and the soft-top has replacment support for window frame was too low to engage properly on the softtop part... however the bar which they latch to is spring loaded and it was possibe to push-upf rom underneath (inside rear side panel) then it engaged ok (luckily only required once per season). remaider of fitting was fine and we have had a practice at fully up and down and all is well. now all we need is some more sun!

I was thinking about getting the soft top for my freelander! but i was wondering :

a) is it worth it?
b) is it alot noiser when u have it up?

worth it?? depends what you are looking for I guess - I managed to get mine off ebay for £175 so I can't complain at the price, its worth bearing in mind that it will only open up the back end of the car and it is not like a true cabriolet tho'. Even rear passengers will be more or less covered so its more of a 'fresh air' thing than a full on 'wind in ya face'. You probably get more blowing around by taking out the targa panels from the sunroof. Whether or not you have the tailgate window up or down has a hell of a bearing on how much wind buffets around the car as well.

It is a bit noisier with the cloth-top up obviously but nothing that will majorly distract - I have been running mine for about a month with the soft-top on now and I am pretty much used to it and I run up and down the motorway most days.

Hi Steve,

It's a bit of hassle compared with decent cabriolet hoods but it does enablethe right summer experience...
I had a revious FL and had a "shower cap" it was awful; no headroom no rear view and speed limited to 45mph... started raining on way back from wales; got bored at 45 and so stoped and removed it - no rain if you kep above 50mph; so far this is much better bet.
WRT noise found a petrol soft top noisier but the TD4 does emit much noise rom exhaust so little difference for me.

Our soft top arrived today, Brand New original part for £249 from m-m4x4.com for £249, better deal than used on Ebay? Put in on in about an hour including removing hard top (who says you have to take bars of first?) and am really impressed. OK - everything is a bit stiff, but I'm sure it will all give a little after its been up a while. Side window beading could probably do with a bit of olive oil or some such.
And the F/L also has a special place for the all important Red Key - good detailing (will be OK when the gas meter needs reading!).
And back to the thread, what an ingenious little adjuster to make sure that the roof switch is depressed more or less as necessary.
My Only hitch is that the rear window isn't going inside the edge of the fabric in one corner everytime, but again after its been stood for a while I am sure that everything will fit just fine. I presume that is what the adjusters inside the back top rail are for?
