I’m sure this must have been answered before but can’t find it...so apologies if it has.....
I’m replacing rear main oil seal on 12J 2.5NA. Don’t have the LR tool but I’m using a suitable size drift to press the new seal into the flywheel housing. My question is how far does it go in? Flush with the housing? All the way until it bottoms out?
The wear mark on the crankshaft journal is about 1/3 of the way across from the rear journal face.
I’m well aware of the process for fitting PTFE seal...just don’t know how far it needs to in.
Any advice gratefully received
Thanks!
Andy

Should be same as 2.25 about 0.5mm below

Thanks Steve
My workshop manual doesn’t seem to have that page.
I ended up getting the vernier out and taking some measurements.
The seal is 11.5mm thick.
When pressed all the way in it leaves 7.6mm of crankshaft journal protruding.
Since the journal is 24mm wide this puts the seal 4.9mm from the bottom face.
I gave the journal a good polish with 1000 grit wet and dry and fitted the seal dry so that some of the PTFE seal ‘welds’ itself to the journal in the first few turns.
This has given a good leak free result.
Hope someone else finds this useful.
A
