just replaced seal in my rear hub (drum brakes) and it still leaks. Took special care to replace new seal right way round but it is not exactly obvious which is the correct way to fit. Any other reason why it should leak?? I have now replaced seal 3 times:confused:

presumably oil ,the brgs are lubricated by grease, and seal on rear of hub doesnt stop oil, oil should be stopped by coming through to hub by a seal in stub axle on post 93/94 vehicles and seal in front of brgs behind drive flange on earlier ,if you fit rr seal rct3511 its an oil seal for hubs that run on axle oil to rear of hub

Has the stub axle got a grove worn in it ?
Are you fitting genuine seals ? some of the aftermarket ones are ****.

just checked breather which is clear. I have been using britpart seals which could be the problem. The plastic hub cover is a bit worn could that really be the problem??
I will buy another platic cover and fit as they are so cheap. What make of seal should I buy??

i prefer to use genuine land rover seals.
As for the hub cap I prefer the heavy duty drive flanges as they have a tight screw cap instead of a ****ty plastic cap that gets bashed off when you play in the mud.

what is seal in stub axle called oil or grease seal?? Its the seal in the stub axle that I changed and it appeared to fail. I say appeared because after a 1 mile test drive there was EP90 all over the rim. I cleaned this off and then checked how well plastic hb cap fitted. No more oil as appeared as yet? When I topped up the axle with EP90 I poured it straight down the axle as it was easy access and tilted up on an angle with axle stand.
Maybe the seal is ok after all.
Thanks for your help

so you didnt replace hub seal ,just rear hub seal in wheel brg hub facing backplate is grease seal frc8221/fts2783/ftc4785 all the same seal(no garter spring),seal on out side near drive member is oil seal frc8222, from la onwards there is seal in the back of stub axle ftc5268 which is oil seal ,which is why later axles are often dry in the splines of half shaft /drive member and wear

HI Hope I am posting this on correct thread .Can you please tell me which way around the rear hub seal goes on a series land rover is it lip towards the bearing and flat edge to stub axle or the other way round cheers
