Just to double check...Is there just the one big oil seal for the bearings on the back i.e. not one in the stub axle or anything, and is it ok for there to be gear oil in the bearings?

I'm replacing the oil seals nearest the brake back plates as the brake shoes are wet through with oil.

I always pack the bearings with grease when I put them together but that seems to end up replaced by diff-oil when I take them off again!

I had this problem on a S3 lightweight. The stub axle can wear where the rubber rubs on it. Check for a groove on the stub axle before replacing it as it will leak again.

There's nothing stopping the oil getting to the bearings but the manual tells you to pack them with grease as well! Depending on the age the early hubs have a replaceable ring where the seal runs.

Thanks lads, it was something I'd read in another thread that had got me thinking there might be another seal for the half-shaft.

I'll pack the lot with decent grease before I put it together in order that there's something to lubricate while the ep80 makes its way along the shafts.

I looked at the stub axle and it doesn't look too bad but the seal that was on had gone fairly brittle and is a cheap copy. I understand the kosher Land Rover ones are a lot beefier with a metal back. This one was just plastic.

I just hope I've ordered the right ones this time. I managed to order a set of post 1980 bearings before and nothing fits, they've been on the shelf for a year so can't send em back...anyone want a pair let me know RTC3537

I always seem to struggle with knowing what to order. My v5 says the vehicle was first registered 1/7/81 but all the brake and axle components seem to be pre'80...suppose the axles may have been swapped as it looks like it was used as a competition vehicle for a good while...

Thanks for the replies
