Googled, searched and flicked through the books, what the hell is rear guard and why have I got a warning light under the brake light?

My best arm chair guess would be its ex military and it had a switch for convoy lights (light on rear diff) or perhaps a fog lamp tell tale dash light?

Defo not ex military, it's been a farm hack for most of it's life. It is a very late S3, I don't know if so e of the gear fitted was used in the ninety as its got hazards as a standard loom fit.

later series threes should have a rear fog light fitted on the offside rear panel. This is the reason the number plate moved to the nearside. MOT fail if the guy is up on his manufacturing dates. Fog guard is only required on the offside.

I take it that is meant to indicate if the light is on, it's an amber caption rather than a red.

Warning lights on Land Rovers have been a little hap hazard over the years. The amber light may well be a low fuel warning usually only fitted to a diesel. Rear fog gaurd should be on the centre dash panel and illuminate when fog lamp is activated. Lots of previous owners may have messed around with things though.
