My TD5 Defender has got quite bad corrosion visible on the outside where the aluminium skin has reacted with the steel subframe. I could rub it down, fill and repaint but I don't expect it will be long before the corrosion bursts through again. I have heard it is possible to remove the skin, treat the corrosion on both the frame and the skin and refit but I've also read that taking the skin off normally knackers it to beyond any reasonable use. So I am thinking of replacing the skin on the lower section of the door after removing as much rust from the frame as I can and giving it good rust preventative treatment. Anyone got experience of this and who is a good supplier of door skins? I can imagine there are various standards and I expect the low standard ones are a sod to fit. All comments welcome!
