Having been able to unlock my tail door of my 110 van with a house key I have decided that I want to make the door more secure.

Has anyone got any experience of fitting an additional lock to the rear door? It doesn't need to be pretty, something like this vehicle lock (see below) would suffice if there was enough room to fit it. There appears that there may be some room just below the existing lock but without buying the lock and offering it up to the vehicle I do not know if it would fit. Does anyone know what fitting this type of lock comes with and whether it somes with metal plates for the rear so the screws/bolts cannot be pulled through the vehicle skin?

No added an additional lock, but I have changed the barrels, the problem is, that after years of use the barrel will accecpt any key, infact anything that will turn it.

Its an easy job to take the barrel out. Remove the locking mechanism from the door, you will see on the side of the cylinder that holds the barrel a small hole, put a small drill in there, or something similar to press the release baring. Then all you need to do is put in the key, turn it, and it will pop out. Put in a new barrel, and if you can be bothered do them all. I got a new set from eBay for about £7 inc P&P.

If the barrel does not want to come out, then a metal drill bit and a drill will soon have it drilled out. Just butcher the barrel, then pick out the springs and tumblers, then there is nothing to hold it it. Also, a good soaking of oil (not WD40 as it destroys grease and the locks are packed with grease and it will run in) before hand will ease off any corroded parts.
 
not sure if it comes with a back plate, but it should be easy enough to make one for it. i wouldnt fit it without an extra plate.
 
The only problem is; fitting one of these makes it look like there's something worth nicking inside. And some git will smash the window to get in instead.:mad:
 
I am a gardener and designer - I think the cement mixer in the back and advertising on the side will probably make people curious to what is inside. Of course when I am carrying farm yard manure I will leave the door unlocked as any tea leaves would be welcome to investigate and have a closer feel of what is in the back ;)
 
That van lock will fit your 110, I've seen them fitted to all three doors on a 110 hardtop.

Replacing the lock barrel for one that can't be opened with a lolly stick is a start, but isn't infallible. Some scrotes broke into the back of my mates 90 hardtop by levering the nearside rear window glass out of the rubber, reaching in and unlocking the door. Fortunately for him they were disturbed by someone who called the Police and nothing was nicked.

I've fitted a Chubb 5 Lever mortice lock my rear door, I used a metal housing designed to mount the mortice lock and it's keep to industrial metal doors.

I got this housing from a local locksmiths, it's made by a company called -

The only tell-tale that you have extra locks fitted is the Chubb escutcheon plate. Here's a couple of pics -

Oh, and I forgot to say, you need to get the keys recut on to longer blanks.

Another advantage of Chubb 5-lever mortice locks is that the locksmith can sell you any number of locks keyed-alike.

So I've got the same key pattern on one of my lock-up garages and on the two locks that I haven't yet got around to fitting on the 110's front doors.

noticed that the lock at the top of this page is being sold by B/Q now. didnt check the price though.
