Rear diff oil Leak. oh eck!

Mornin,

had the car on the ramps at kwik fit today sorting out a rear hanger on the exhaust that had come loose, and low and behold the rear diff is leaking.

its the passinger side where the drive shaft comes out.. i asume its a seal that has perrished?

My mate who works there said it looks a dear job and a ball ache to do.

3 questions....

1, is it a ball ache, safe to drive, and is my diff about to explode on the m6 on the way to the lakes this weekend (1st weekend off in 8 weeks)

2 will running "MONDO MODE" do it any harm till i can afford to get it done.

If you top up with diff oil it should get you through the lakes, they will be slightly more polluted afterwards fish kills, rare wild flowers perishing, not real environmental danger

Its a standard driveshaft seal, you have to strip part of the suspension and hub to free up the driveshaft. Once free, the shaft pops out with a tap from a junior bolster or suitably sized flat bar.

You can get pullers that extract the seal, just drill in two self tappers opposite each other, use a claw hammer to prise out the self tappers and the seal should come with it.

Tap in the new one with suitable size drift (Large socket set)/mallet, even press the old seal up against it and tap in with a mallet.

Running Mondo mode will have no affect on the oil pressure/seal

Crawled under the rear diff pre-MOT, noticed I had a slight leak from the rear driveshaft oil seaL and very slight leak from the pinion flange. Cleaned it up and it went through the MOT.

Purchased new seals £20.89 +VAT each (TOC 100000)

Pinion seal was £8.37 +VAT (FTC 5258)

Will take some pics when I change the seals

Tell me about it!! - had a slight weep (1 drip overnight) on the O/S rear diff after new wheel bearings were fitted and had to do the same. New seal cured the problem.

Im not sure whether the driveshaft leak is from the rubber flange that hugs the driveshaft or the metal to metal join in the aluminium casing itself.

There is a small bead of mastic/putty around the new seals, if that is a common source for leaks then it could be re-sealed with any good mastic or jointing compound

FOR SALE - two rear driveshaft seals, boxed as new LOL

No I'll change the leaking one when I have time, bought the other one as a spare, I should realy replace the two at once as a matter of course.

Although for that price I feel they should be on display in a Trophy cabinet.

Mine was the seal - but the oil ran down and appeared to be coming from the back (black) plate that colts to the rear diff.

LR state that RTV sealent is to be used - I'd probably use hermetite as I have been confidemce inspired by this product.
