I noticed today when working on my rear diff that my rear crossmember is in a sorry state, infact, I can push with my thumb and the metal will move.

It is around the middle part where the various holes are for fitting things, I have my tow braket mounted on a tow plate thing so have no real need for these holes, so, could I cut this section out, and weld in a big lump of plate in?

I would prefer not to have to cut the old one off, and getting a new one put on, but if I had to, what the deal? Am I right in thinking all you do is, cut the old one off flush, then the new one slides over the chassis section and that gets welded in place?

you could do what you want as long it is strong enough.

new rear cross member comes with about 10 inches of chassis on it and after cutting yours off in the right place, the new one will slide over your existing chassis rails, make sure you remove the wiring that runs through the chassis before cutting! Its a relatively easy job to replace and should take only a few hours

Paddocks or Craddocks

I recently costed the metal to build one myself, however I don't need to pay the welder. If you need to pay a welder and get the steel it works out about the same if not more.
