It's hardly unheard of for ford to cover up safety critical faults. Just look at
the Pinto's exploding tank, the incorrectly specified firestone tyres & the
problems with cruise control (effecting mainly the same models as the door
latch), the ignition problem causing cars to cut out (more of a problem on the
large American vehicles than it would be on a Ka as you loose power steering and
servo assisted breaking). Quite frankly it's cheaper to pay the victims or there
families hush money than to recall the vehicles and take the PR hit that you see
when there are recalls.
