Very clever of GM. Places independent shops as well as Saturday
mechanics at a disadvantage, doesn't it? Maybe GM is too clever,
though.

New car buyers: demand that the CD-ROM Factory Service Manual comes
with the car at no extra charge at the time of delivery. If they
squawk it costs them hundreds of $$, tell them a blank CD-R, with
plastic case, costs 35 cents from Pick'n'Save. If its still no, walk.

The Libertarian philosopher is let the market forces work. That means
get your Congress to pass a law requiring the F.S.M. on CD-ROM to be
standard equipment, just like the seat belts. After all, its safety
equipment -- how can an independent shop do an emergency job safely if
it doesn't have all the specs, parts numbers, and procedures? GM may
try to pass along the $800 extra for it, but when Hundai tacks on 75
cents, its fair market value, GM will get the point in a hurry.
