Paul,
On the basis this is a 95/96 Discovery, with a 300Tdi engine,
200kmiles on the clock and a badly aligned replacement wing for £4k
.... my first instinct would be to walk away. There are better vehicles
out there for that money - and I don't mean the "L" plate for 6k
either..
Is this a specialist LR dealer, or just an ordinary dealer who happens
to have a couple of older Disco's on the forecourt? Ask about when
the cam belt was replaced and to see the proof of when it was done
(i.e. invoice from garage that did the work). If they fob you off with
any old excuse ... walk away.
Misaligned body panels can be a nightmare to put right. Unless you can
see that the misalignment is caused by something simple then get the
dealer to have it straightened before you accept delivery. If, as you
suspect, the car has been in a shunt then the underlying cause of the
misalignment may be serious - and expensive to put right.
Have you driven it yet? Does it go in a straight line with the
steering wheel straight? Are there any knocking noises from the
suspension when you corner or go over bumps in the road? Does the
transmission "clunk" when you let the clutch out a bit sharpish in
first or reverse?
