I have just bought a 1996 Toyota RAV4 2lt petrol with 65,000 miles - one
owner.

There is just one problem. When travelling with the revs at around 3000rpm
and then pressing the accelerator there is a high pitched whistle (like a
gas turbine) coming from the rear of the car. When cruising along the noise
can be turned off and on by gently pressing and releasing the pedal.

I have checked the exhaust system for leaks and found none.

Someone has suggested that it is within the silencer caused by a blockage
and back pressure. Is this possible?

It is not connected with movement as I can also create the noise even when
the car is stationery.

All help much appreciated.

Sounds quite likely, get someone to make the noise* while you have a poke
around under the car to try and find where it is coming from. (try not to
gas yourself or get burnt by the exhaust)

*when I say get someone to make the noise, I of course mean get them to
operate the throttle, until the car make the noise. If they just stand there
whistling it wouldn't serve much purpose!
