Hi Guys,
My 2001 defender has just started making a rattle at low speeds (fairly sure it sounds like something in the rear end). Its noticeable whilst coasting to a stop or driving slow. Any ideas what this could be?

One of the 4 UJ's on your 2 propshafts is most likely.
Next time you drive it and park up, get underneath and feel how hot and loose each of them is. If any of them is hot to touch then it's knackered.

Ok thanks for the info Patman.....its stopped making the noise! I think it only does it after a long drive on the freeway or similar. I got underneath and checked the UJ's which seem fine although a couple of weeks ago, i greased them and a few drops of water came out of one of them as the grease went in....so I suspect it might be that one. I'm taking it up the freeway in a few days so i'll check it then. Thanks again for the quick reply.

Ok, the noise is back and getting louder.....i hopped underneath and the UJ's seem fine....not hot or even warm and no movement.....quite a regular knocking/rattling noise if I just roll along either in gear or out. What's the easiest way to check if its the rear diff or rear axles?

Ok....turned out to be a very cheap fix, but could have been a disaster....the noise kept getting louder and eventually I jacked up the back of the car and found I could undo the wheel nuts on the right rear with my fingers!....Tightened them back up, and noise stopped!
I had a puncture repaired 3 weeks ago, and the shop obviously forgot to tighten them....
