Today I have just noticed a rattle that comes from the rear of the engine when idling (series 3 Diesel). When I put it into gear the rattle disappears.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any info.

does it have to be in gear to lose the rattle ??

can you lose the rattle just by holding the clutch pedal down ??

regardless i suspect it's your shudder springs in the clutch plate have taken a "set" and are now loose in the plate, really irritating but not the end of the world

Thanks for the replies.

I tried it again and it is still there when the clutch is engaged at really low revs. It goes away quickly on higher revs.

Someone else suggested clutch plate springs. If it isn't a problem I think I can live with it.

apart from being an irritating noise it generally isn't a problem if it is the shudder springs taken a "set" and rattling on tickover

btw, clutch engaged is with the pedal up, disengaged is with the pedal down
