hello all.

i own a 1963 series 2a, on the third time around the clock: 219500miles?? from new im the fourth or fifth owner.
Anyway i have a rattle that has started coming from the gearbox, for about a year or two now, when i drive along i hear a rattle or a sort of chain rattling sound come from box or transfer case, now it gets noticeble as i accelerrate up through the gears and when i let go of the throttle and coast along in gear without the clutch pedal in.

now when i touch the clutch pedal the noise stops instantly, but if i keep the clutch in and build up revs to about 1500 rpm, it makes the sound again.
now the clutch was replaced back in 2010 but not the throw out bearing or anything else, why i had replace the clutch was be cause the rivets that hold the friction disc had sheared off and the disc fell apart.

anyway i have been a little worried for several weeks now fearing that the gearbox needs to be overhauled as it has never been touched since i have bought it, and that was 10 years and i have roughly done 65,000 miles, i don't know if the other owner ever touched the box, as he was using it as a run around, to work and home.

any help would be great.

Tony Allard.

ahh ok,
what i might do sometime is record the sound with a camera and upload it here or on youtube.
it would be better to hear it.

thanks anyway Dominic

went for a drive in it a while ago with the centre seat access lid to gearbox up, and im not thinking its the throw-out bearing or gearbox, instead i think its the exhaust mount or prop shaft as the mounts on the exhaust have play in them and the spline on the rear prop shaft has a lot of play in it too.

i'll check those out tomorrow and it maybe a case of getting a new prop shaft from Melbourne.

Mine has a similar rattle in 3rd and 4th. Reduces as the box gets warm. Sounds like two pieces of sheet metal vibrating together. Otherwise the box is fine and smooth. I notice it much more in winter in low temperatures. Doesn't happen in 1st or 2nd though.
Something is obviously worn but I see it as not worth rebuilding or buying a recon until something more serious operational wise happens.

ok land raver.
i took the rear propshaft off yesterday and checked it out, nothing wrong there, i pumped grease into the uj's and packed grease around the spline as grease doesnt get there well when i use the grease nipple,
anyway i started it up and put it in all gears while on the driveway, and the gearbox has no noise coming from it, i even got it up to 40mhp and no rattle noises, but put the rear prop in and went for a drive its there again, i have narrowed it down to the rear diff, as it has been noisy since i got it but it did not rattle back then,
i replaced the rear diff in 2009 cause my original one had a crack in the crown wheel housing, so i got a second hand one from the wreckers for $150, the downside to the diff was that the landrover that it come out of was powered by a Holden 6 cylinder red motor, 3.3litre.

i think that the gears and bearings have wear in them, so i need to replace the hub oil seals and fill her up with more oil as the oil level is low, im going to add a graphite gearbox treatment to the diff, as my dad used that in his cars and it would clear up noisy gears and bearings.

thanks all that replied.
