Anybody give me any ideas on what sort of vehicle I could get for around
£1500? What sort of problems to watch out for?

Thanks

shop carefully you could get a decent early 90's EFi
example.but................if you watched Topgear a few weeks back you would
understand the problems. British Leyland built the classic range rover down
to a price including using cheap electrical gear (the example on Tg was the
Jaguar XJS) the connectors on the looms are iffy butty and cause myriad
annoying problems I know my lovely EFi Vogue SE 'Peggy' let me down a number
of times, by cutting out one bank of cylinders - connector to injector
voltage pack, ignition failure - bad connector to coil , electric seat stuck
in forward position - switch unit faulty etc etc. check everything
electrical, windows, roof, aircon. the build quality is frankly not good
interior trim just doesnt fit properly due to the use of cheap plastic the
later soft dash models are streets ahead but logically more expensive.
the V8 is a beautiful engine if looked after check inside the rocker cover
(torch req) if you have black deposits the engine is likely to have been
abused ideally it should be a light amber brown colour, the auto box is
pretty good but check the kickdown works properly, as previously mentioned
the rear tailgate the parts are not cheap! it should latch properly - owner
develop a style of closing using two hands at the outer edges of the top
tailgate not the handle. alt.fan.landrover is the font of all knowledge and
there are some very good forums about try
http://threads.lro.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/postlist.pl?Cat=&Board=range
which IMO is about the best

On the other hand, I paid £600 for a mid 80's Vogue, been running it daily
since with a few playdyas thrown in along with a lot of laning, not really
had any problems, headlining's gone of course, and its none to tidy, but
reliable so far. These things are relative of course, need to keep an eye on
everything and fix thinks when they look like there going to go wrong.

See my web site:-

I paid £500 for our '85 V8 Auto, and its not been a bad one.
Was sold as an unfinished project with no MOT, so I probably got it for a
few hundred quid under market. Took it home, bolted the mirror to the roof,
and it passed its test, so I stuck the rest of the interior trim in it &
gave it to the wife to thrash.
A job she has done quite mercilessly.
£1500, if you are careful, patient, persistant and lucky, should get you a
reasonable late EFi, or a decent deisel. Just nipping into budget will be
LPG converted cars, but only just - check them over thorougly, as at that
money good likleyhood that the conversion is giving grief.
If you have a little time and are reletively competebt with the spanners, go
for a 'fixerupper'.
£500 should get you something useful, and road worthy.
£200 gets you an aluminiul top tail gate, and another £100 should sort out
the odds and sods.
£150 gets you a complete new interior if you want one.
And after that, well axles, suspension, engine and box are not hugely
complicated or difficult to work on, and most parts are pretty reasonably
priced compared to something like say a Beemer!
You could get something pretty good for your £1500.
Thinking about it, I dont think that ours has cost us much more than that to
date, and that has a fully reconditioned motor in it!
