Range Rover (L322, 54 plate) won't re-sync

Hi all,

I have recently acquired a 54 plate (2004) Range Rover Vogue. However, the key (that as supplied with the vehicle) does will not re-sync (I have tried many times with variations of the below and replaced the batteries). The key will open the door manually, but the alarm goes off until I get the key in the ignition. I was using the following procedure:

(1) Get in and close all doors (I have tried with both the doors locked and open). Turn ignition on and off quickly (to the first position) and remove the key (all within about 5 seconds).
(2) Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition off, while holding down the "unlock" button, press the "lock" button three times. Release the "unlock" button. (You may or may not get the confirmation from the door locks*). Holding the key at your head level provides best results as the key sensor is in the side window pillar.
(3) Repeat for each key you want to initialize within 30 seconds after the last one you initialized (if you have more).
(4) Right after doing the last key, quickly put the key back in the ignition and turn it on/off again (presumably to the first position) to finalize.

* The car does NOT respond.

I presume there are 1 of 2 issues,

(1) The key was never actually programmed to match the car (maybe it just has the immobilizer and correct key cut) and a new key is needed from a dealer at 160 GBP. In addition, the dealer insists that they HAVE to "program it to the car" at an additional cost of 100 GBP (i.e. you can't not pay this and just do the process above - apparently).
(2) The receiver in the car does not work (or some other component), and need to have car plugged in to a computer to see if the car is picking up the key fob being pressed (50 GBP to plug it in to a computer, and 50 GBP for a Land Rover specialist [not a main dealer, they 100 GBP per hour] to diagnose).

However, each of the two methods above could be fruitless if it's the other!

Any help much appreciated.

Regards,

Ben

Can you recommend a diagnostics unit? Are these universal to other vehicles?

The vehicle came with two keys, but on looking to replace the battery on the second key (to sync that as well) I found out it had no internals (no immobilizer or PCB etc.) :-(

Sounds like the key is just knackered.

You can buy a second hand key off eBay and just rob the internal PCB card out and replace your one

You don't need a garage to re-sync as long as you keep the same transponder chip.

The "All Comms" unit from RSW solutions is a good all rounder piece of diagnostics kit for the l322 range rover.

It only works on L322 range rovers as diagnostics for these cars are specific, so not the same as other cars sadly.

If you want something fully loaded then the "fault mate MSV2" is wicked !

I own both, but the all comms is a good basic diagnostics kit for the money.

Hope that helps

Right, ordered a new key (as I didn't have a second one anyway) which arrived today. Collected it, and went into the car park to sync myself. However, the new key won't sync either. Went back in and they looked rather smug that I was going to have to pay them to sync it. However, they couldn't get the keys (either of them) to sync either (they said they sync it on a computer, but sounded like they did the manual process when they came back in and said the car didn't respond). Said I would have to book it in (as presumably they will need to fault find the receiver). Anyone seen this before (I checked, all fuses seem OK). Where is the receiver for a start?

One thing you could try is to take the car out into the countryside - well away from any wifi etc and try again. The ACTUAL printed instructions from LR state that it may be necessary to get the car well away from any rf activity for the synching process to work.

Thanks, will try that. Have tried in two places (at home and at the Land Rover Dealership) ...

The L322 doesn't suffer with RF interference like the P38 did

Thanks. What does it look like? Is it close to the auto lever?

Ouch! 250 quid :-(

RANGE ROVER LAND ROVER . FAULTMATE MSV2 NANO DIAGNOSTIC UNIT | eBay

It is about the size of a cigarette packet and white....as attached.

I am not saying that is at fault, but they have been known to have a fit every now and then.

Thanks, very useful. Difficult to diagnose (other than checking wiring looks good) without plugging it in to a diagnosis machine. Will take to a local specialist who can plug it in (as not sure how long I will have it to warrant buying the MSV-2).

Not to the extent that P38's did.But the SIDS that LR technical e mailed to me clearly states that removing the car from possible RF interference will help if problems are experienced during key synching.
I only make the point because LR did - and SIDS documents contain info that is worth taking notice of...

OK, so ordered the new keys, and the Land Rover dealer couldn't get the keys to sync either. Took it to a Land Rover specialist, and they had another RR in, so swapped the RF receiver from another vehicle they had and it started working. Then when they put my RF receiver in, it started working again - but only for a bit! They replaced the RF receiver module (apparently near the middle rear brake light if I recall) and it has been working since.
