Range Rover 3.5 - wierd noise in dashboard

Hi -

My 88 Rangie efi has a woodpecker in the dash - well not really, but when I
give it gas or go uphill, I get a sound like an irregular rapid click coming
from the drivers side dash.

It sounds like a vacuum valve to me, but with my manuals I can't seem to
figure out what I'd be looking for under the dash if I took it apart -
anyone had similar problem or have any ideas?
