Hi there, my freelander td4 ran out of fuel yesterday, hasnt been used for a while so i started it up and let i run for a while, thats when i ran out of deisel.

Today i put deisel into it and when i turned on the ignition to feed the fuel through the fuel pump, i noticed that there was a steady flow of deisel leaking from under the wheel arch where the fuel pump is, it stopped when i turned the ignition off, i tried to start the car but flattened the battery and im not to keen to do anything else till i know how to stop the fuel running out underneath the car.

Does anyone know what i should be doing to sort this out.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

cheers

thats a no then. Before restarting i think you needed to prime the fuel into the engine, ie get rid of any air.You have to do this on dezuls although there are self priming, think the 2.5td does this.Anyway the fuel leaking means that the pump probbaly is working but you will have to trace and fix the leak before any thing.

Firstly, the TD4 is self-priming.

But,
you have a bigger worry than that.

The "first" fuel pump is up under that rear wheel arch and only works when you switch the ignition on.

So,
if there is a leak in that area, then it will appear when the ignition is on and stop when it is off

Now,
there should be no fuel anywhere external to the fuel system or the whole car

so,

either you have a busted pipe or connection on the pump that allows it to be pumped to the outside world, rather than onto the High Pressure pump and thus to the engine

or

someone has cut the pipe at its easiest accessable point and drained your fuel tank (a common practice in these days of high fuel prices).

hence you ran out of fuel in the first place, and then pumped yer newly added fuel onto the ground, in the second place.
