Rage Rover Classic starter issues

Hi all, I've just bought a non starting 2 door 79 Range. Goes (to a fashion) when bumped.

Whiped the starter off yesterday and got it on the bench. Pos applied directly to the motor terminal it spins it up.
Pos applied to the solenoid battery feed terminal and a pos to the IGN spade connector, big nothing. Am I right in saying solenoid should kick out so therefor its knackered or am I doing anything wrong?

Yes check the solenoid its behind the plastic box on the bulk head near side
