Hi

The Land rover is off the road for a little, while the odd jobs are being done, and ive Done plenty of research on this, so fully understand the method of removal of the old bushes. But still have a few questions a search hasnt cleared up.

Ideally i'd like to use original bushes. Would it be possible to press the new pushes in with threaded bar and a couple of sockets? Or a vice? As I have no access to a press, or know anyone with one either really.

I must admit, i am on a tight budget at the moment, with other things needing tending to on the land rover. So an alternative would be flo flex polybushes, has anyone tried these? The land rover will only do a maximum of 5k miles per year, but dont want be doing the bushes again. Superpro seem too expensive.

Lastly, i beleive there are two types of bushes for the defender front radius arms. Mine is a 1995 300tdi 90. Does anyone know the part number for these?

If you use polybushes you can put them in yourself. If you use genuine you'll need a press, no question. Mines took 15ton of pressure to push in. Personally I would always stick with genuine unless there's any real reason to get polys but it's up to you. Use your VIN to identify which bushes you will need, there are thick and thin radius arms

Thanks mate. Thats cleared that up for me then really. Going to have to pop to a garage to fit genuine ones then. Or polybush myself!
 
Genuine bushes for me.
I bought a press for that exact reason.
Where about's are you? I can press them in for you although no doubt you're miles away.
Offers their if not.
 
I've just fitted a set on genuine bushes to mine, as far as they would go!
I had a surplus galvanised square section bumper and A frame, so I made up a press, using the 3 ton bottle jack from the 90. Well copperslipped, the bushes went in until there was about 7mm protruding, then wouldn't move at all:eek:

Just off to my parts supplier / garage, to see if they will push them home.
 
Thanks guys. Sounds like they are more more difficult to press in than i first realised. I'll see if i can find someone with a press, or i may have to just polybush
 
i fitted the flo flex in mine a couple years ago and have just removed them as part of my rebuild and they still look like new.

the only this with them is make sure you grease up the bolt that goes through the center or it will corrode it self to the metal tube inside the bush.

I missed one when i done mine and it was difficult to remove, copper greased the others and they was fine

yep been there, nut came off easy enough, bolt was not coming outta the bush though.

3T no where near enough to press out/in a bush, took a full 8 tonne to get mine out, about 5 inserting them.

Is that inserting polybushes Tim? I thought they could be done without a press? Ive only got a vice or threaded bar
 
Polybushes can be done by hand. What he meant was that the bolt goes through a metal sleeve in the middle of the bush. If you don't copperslip the bolt when you're putting the arm back onto the vehicle then it will rust onto the sleeve and be an absolute bugger to remove. The polys on my last vehicle were like that and it took a lot of cutting and chiseling the get the arm out
