Ok so I’ve painted the radiator panel and the radiator etc. I would like to fit this to enable the engine to run. Can the radiator panel be fitted with out the wings? Also should it be fitted with rubber washers?

Thanks.

Norrie

Theoretically yes the rad panel provides structural integrity by connecting the wings with the bulkhead which are the two strength points for the vehicle. If you want to test run the engine you could fit it by connecting the hoses but you’ll have to secure the panel to the frame at the bottom somehow. Why do you want to do that? Do you need new wings?

There should be rubber bushes / spacers where the rad panel bolts to the chassis. Surprisingly quite thin ones but they are supposed to reduce vibration etc.

The reason I want to do it as the whole car is stripped to the chassis apart from the bulkhead and engine. I hope to put the radiator back on so I can run the engine and move the car out of the garage so I can get the roof and tub in to paint them.
I know I could run the engine without the radiator but would prefer to get it all built back up.the wings haven’t been prepped and painted yet.
I take it the rad panel bolts on to the chassis then as I can’t remember?

Norrie.

Put the rad into the front panel and you can connect up the rad hoses etc and put in the 3 bottom bolts of the panel to hold it rigid, I did that when I tested the engine in mine before hiding it behind all the panels.
I used a bit of old inner tube as a spacer.

Just fit the panel and rad, the top hose will keep the upper end in place for what you want to do.Do not run without coolant, even a short run can cause local overheating in a diesel.

Be careful where you take him with his bits exposed. Henry never liked being shown with his pants down. I blame the diesel putter downerers. They lack the touch to make a Rover diesel purr and I fear it’s given him something of a complex.
Tastefully draped dust sheets or tarpaulins can save his embarrassment but at least the front panel will be on. There can’t be anything worse than a casual passer by being able to see right up your trumpet.

He he I like it.
There’s no danger of any passer bys up at my place as I live in the middle of no where.
So as,for my radiator panel I can fit that ok then? I need to finish painting my bulkhead first really so I can bolt everything back onto the engine

Norrie.
