R380 stumpy

I'm looking to buy an r380 stumpy but struggling to find what vehicle it came from? My research just brings up (the stumpy was made to replace the lt77)
The 200tdi has an lt77 and the 300tdi has a regular r380?
Any help appreciated
 
I think the "stumpy" bell housing was made by land rover so it was possible to fit a 200tdi. in the Range Rover model of that time.
Do not think any production Defenders had this [short housing ] set up though. Housing is about 25/30mm shorter than a Lt77 bell housing and will allow for the longer tail end of the R380 if this box is fitted.. As you may guess input shaft length differs.
 
That makes sense, I thought there was a transition period at the end of the 200tdi where they started to fit the stumpy, thanks for the info
Nope. Its purpose was to offer a warranty replacement for the LT-77 after LT-77 production stopped. Ie if your 200Tdi Disco needed a new box the stumpy R380 is a direct fit (mostly) for the LT-77.

Ashcroft transmissions has info on their site about the box.

With the right bits you can convert a regular R380 to a stumpy variant. However, it might just be easier to stick with the LT-77.

Thank you for confirming, I'm installing an om606 so think an lt77 might struggle

I would imagine you will be way above the specs of the R380 too. Land Rover wouldn’t use the R380 behind a 4.6 Rover V8 only the 4.0 due to the torque.

They are rated for 380nm or 280ft-lb.

Not sure what an LT-77 is rated for. I’d suspect quite similar.

I won't be building a high boost engine, probably keep it stock turbo so it will be at the limit of the r380 but people run them way past that without issues (this won't be going off-road)

On the R380 my faulty memory tells me that the R380 found in the td5's has an uprated bearing set - On the main shaft - could be wrong though as has happened before
