Hi all,

I replaced all oils on the landy 90. TD5 p10 , gear box I used 75w-90 as recommended by the local factors... but changing to 3rd seems to have a little "crunch" when warmed up... only slight and with a slow change and engine speed its fine...

Read that the box should be using MTF94 - but it seems difficult to track down a brand other than genuine LR, any recommendations?

Also looking on Ashcrofts site, its seems the actually recommend ATF:
https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/r380-faq-s.html

What oil should I use in my R380 gearbox?

The oil recommended by Land Rover is MTF94. However we have recently found this oil to give better results ATF

Any thoughts?

IME, your R380 will have a preference - either MTF94, or ATF.

SWMBO's prefers MTF94 - which is available on the bay - I put carlube in her gb - change it every two years .....

I tried ATF in it, mainly as a flush, but it didn't like it - was a bit graunchy - mainly 2nd to 3rd, and "whistle" in 5th..... so MTF ...

Not daft money to try them both. :)

Thanks, mine is 2nd to 3rd that I'm getting the graunch! so wondering if its worth trying the MTF to see if it helps.

Double checked the oil that's in and its 75w-80 GL5 semi - it is recommended by the oil supplier for the box...

what brands good for the MTF?

super thank you! will give it a try, worth it for a few quid!
2.4l capacity?

Whilst we are on oils - I put 75w90 GL5 fully syn in the diffs - is this ok? or any thoughts...

I own an 88 LR90 with a 300tdi, R380 and LT230
For the R380 I use MVMTF 75W80 and I've been complimented on how smooth my box changes a few times by a guy that runs an 03REG 110 td5 and a guy that runs a 15REG 110 puma!! So I guess there's something going on there.
In the LT230 I use EP80W90 GL4 - A friend of mine recommended GL4 over GL5 because it is better in boxes which contain brass ferrules.
I also use my own proprietary mix of EP80W90 GL5, sand, mud and water in the axles too.
Hope this helps

Hi i would use the genuine Land Rover mtf 94 if I were you, I think you will genuinely see the difference in gear changes lol, oh and more importantly the gear boxes long term health... Down side is the price, but at changing it once a year and peace of mind is priceless

Ashcroft recommend the triple qx atf dextron 3 which I had tried in mine for a year and it was fine, but not quite as nice as the mtf 94 from Lr

Thanks all. A bit of a new by question but what’s rave and how can you get it?

RAVE is (probably) the Rover Automotive Vehicle Encyclopedia ... a search on here will find you a download link - tis very good - essentially a massive set of PDF's - so can be made to work on everything - even here running Linux :p

I'm on Land Rover's own MTF94. I tried the more expensive Difflock Evolution oils a few years ago when I got the Land Rover. They're nice but not nice enough to justify the higher prices.

Thanks all, I think I’ll try the mtf94 and see if it makes a difference. Reading up the oil I put in says it’s compatible/ equal to 94, so at least I can compare.

all advice greatly appreciated.
