Had the MAF out earlier this week because I didnt feel I was getting the performance out of my TD4 that i used to get.

And based on the general concensus here that the MAFs are only good for about 30,000 miles I decided to have a look at the state of mine at about 29,000.

Anyway, as I said, managed to get mine out (had to dremmel some slots into those security fasteners) and the MAF looks totally spotless. Everything clean and shiny. Im not sure but I was expecting the thing a bit sooty and dirty which would cause the 'out of range' of the sensor, but no, clean and shiny as new.

Was I right to be thinking to get an out of range MAF the thing would be gunged up or would a clean MAF still benifit from the copius sparaying of the carb cleaner?

I did what was suggested and used lots of carb cleaner, let it dry and then re-fitted everything. To be honest I cant really tell if there is any increase in performance. I have invested in a K&N filter which I am waiting to arrive. I hope that will make things a little better. I guess Im just wanting your opinion what I should be expecting?

Oh and as a side issue, while doing the MAF, I noticed I have a peice of rubber tube near the MAF that has almost worn through. The pipe is soft rubber running up the back of the engine, through an in-line filter, and then back down behind the engine. It runs sort of parallel to a steel (breather ?) tube that terminates just behind the MAF. Is this rubber tube the low pressure fuel line do you guys think? Anyway, that rubber tube has been rubbing on the steel breather tube and, as I said, almost worn throgh. Have any of you guys seen this before? (its an 04 TD4)

I will be interested to hear all your thorghts

Dose it shift any better with the MAF unplugged ?

that breather thingy with the filter on't end should be ok to just shorten it to past the damaged bit and stuff the filter back in't tube .

well if yer maf is out of spec there is no sure way of measurement as its a sort electronic themocoupler [measures high end tempriture] un talks to the pooter in m/amps un then tells turbo to git goin un wot amount fuel to dish out. . . .anyhows if yer not sure un yer feel yer loosin power it is normally the main culprit, check out rover rons web site, all sorts er info on the maf subject, the hose yer on about sounds like the vacuum pipe, if it go's into a clear filter [that looks like an old type fuel filter] then if the pipe looks damaged then replace asap. . . .:)

Just a bit of close out, after cleaning the MAF there was a bit of improvement but still a marked 'turbo kicking in' sensation. You know, no power.........turbo....power comes on.
Anyway I replaced the stock rather dirty air filter with a K&N filter (less than £60 from Halfords) and that has brought the car back to how I remember it. Smooth power delivery with little turbo lag and a marked increase in acceleration.

I really didnt think the air cleaner was that dirty. So now I'm a happy man and just thinking how much better the car would be with a Rover Ron Synergy module. Anybody want to lend me one to try????

Andy
