....I will be popping the starter off tomorrow and have heard the bottom bolt can be a bit of s.o.d.

The FL is currently on ramps as I was looking under neath at other stuff, the Q is, is the bolt get at-able easier from underneath or not before I get her off the ramps and then realise it would be easier from underneath!?

Mucho obligato for any advice!

When the starter went on mine I rang round and an indie auto-electrician quoted me a price for a new one from a well known brand that was a really good price and he'd come round and fit it. So that's what I did, just got him to replace it. It didn't take long at all for him to do it and all from the top - so presume its not to tricky.

Groovy - if I may be so bold (as I am just about to take the kids to bed and can't be bothered with endless searching in RAVE) but does the Freelander Bonnet have a 'Service Mode'??

The P38's and the L322's have a bonnet position that if you take the strusts off you can raise the bonnet vertical and using latches, lock it in place - does the FL have similar? as working around the bonnet stay will be a PIA....

Not that I'm aware of.

Maybe a bungee cord to the garage roof? Or a rope to the tow bar or roof rails?

What a serious fecker to get to......

I have large hands but not shovels, more like a large trowel really, and I struggled to get my arm down the gap between starter, turbo housing and the pipes.....I got the bolt out, but it was about 45 minutes of a fight! and I could just barely get my finger tips on the head of the bolt!

What doesn't help is there is a small wiring loom that runs under the starter and the bottom bolt sits close to this, and can be a pain to get a socket on to it with just your finger tips and then trying to get the ratchet onto the socket....

I am NOT looking forward to putting it back on again!

Yes. ;)
You use a wooden prop to hold it right open. It opens wide enough to get a V6 engine out and back in.

Surely a few bolts and you can remove the bonnet completely ;)

Only once the scuttle panel is removed, which means the wipers come off too. It's a lot of work, when a suitable length of tree carcass lifts the bonnet well out the way.
