righttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt, :D

my 90 is NEARLY back on the road. ive bled the brakes but the pedal still depresses alot before it contacts and needs pumping to get it normal again.

it did the servo test in the haynes manual and it seems ok. it did this before i started fiddling with the brakes but not as bad as it is now. the initial push would go further and then it would be ok for a while.

i took it for a little wizz down the road and it didnt get any better. are early 90 brake systems a C*** to bleed? i didnt seem to get any bubbles after the initial lot. order was rear left, rear right, front right, front left as in the haynes. is this right? should i bleed again? or is it my vacuum pump/servo.

need to know before 1pm as my local parts man closes then and i want this sorted this weekend! its been too long!

Cheers

ok im back. i got an eeeezi bleed. are they hard to bleed then? am i doing something wrong? sould i whip open the bleed nipples full force to quickly expel air? should i raise the front with a hi lift? should i give up and go to the pub? why do dogs have cold noses? :(

Mine wern't hard to bleed. The calipers were a **** to rebuild though until I got some genuine seals, before that the pistons kept sticking solid in the bores cos the seals kept swelling. lifting the front end won't help thats a trick fer doing the clutch.

yer i remember the clutch grunt, you told me that one and it worked a treat :) i guess another round of bleeding is in order. ive done it twice and taken it for a spin. hmmmm.

yer doin yer fronts the wrong way round. plus you need to let loads of fluid out of the rears

how much? 500ml enough? i did round three with the fronts the other way around and still nothing. ive left a bit of wood holding down the pedal overnight with the cap on the res undone. hopefully some air will come up overnight.

last go in the morning then its going to the garage along with the rear foggy!

I had this exact same problem on my 1984 90. Jack up each of the rear wheels, on the inside of the drum, about 3/4 of the way up there is what looks like a bolt head sticking out of the drum. On the other side of this is a snail shell cam, which moves the position of the drum. Spin the wheel that is off the floor, turn this cam until it just grabs the wheel, and then back it off again until it just lets go. Check it a few times. If the cam turns then stops solid with no effect you are turning the wrong way, if it just goes round and round with no effect then your shoes are worn. Do this both sides and it should then be very efective at stopping. I did this to mine the difference was incredible. It happens cos as you drive, the shoes move away, and then as you brake they get pushed out again (obviously) pumping the brakes works cos each pump moves them a bit further out, until they touch and there is pressure in the hydraulics.
Afta this has all been adjusted, go for a long drive, kinda 50 miles upwards, and feel for any heat by touching the rear wheels near the centre. If they are warmer than should be expected, then they adjusters need just backing off a touch. Or, just drive and the shoes will wear down until they are just in adjustment again!

Let me know if this works if you havn't already been to the garage!

yer i got the pads the wrong way around and the springs wrong, i figured it out in the end, but whilst adjusting i forced the snail cam too hard and snapped a stud on the shoe :( doh! so im getting another set today and fit it all tonight. thanks for your reply though.

Ahh i see - i didn' know you have changed the shoes also! How easy were your shoes to replace, and the drums to remove? That is the next thing that im gonna have to do with the brakes, cos they are coming to the end of their adjustability for me now!

piece of **** mate. just take note of where the springs are and which way around the shoes are etc. and do one at a time with all the parts. i stripped mine and put the new bits in a week later! not a good idea for a 1st timer to do.

Give us a shout if you need nelp.
