Hi All,

My Defender 110 SW 2.4tdci was fine heading over to Mancunia, but picked up little’n from School and battery light stayed on, rev counter on zero/not working and temperature gauge through the roof. Car still running ok and I know engine wasn’t too hot, any ideas what it is and how to solve?

Thanks

Jonah

Update:-
Had a look on Transit forum and suggested solution was to change battery. My Battery was a Bosch heavy duty one, over spec, bought from Costco for a good price and a 4/5 year guarantee, 2 years old. They changed it no problem and problem seems to be solved, no issue with with rev counter or temp gauge, fingers crossed.
Next Job - well, sort before next Winter - Glow plugs, poor starting in winter. Been needing to be done last 2 winters! The list never ends.....!

Got the same problem. New battery so dosen't seem to be battery issue. I guess it is something with power for instrument cluster.

Dont rule the battery out yet I’ve had two within the last 3 years that have failed one of them with in a week.

with the engine running what’s the voltage going into it?

Didn't check the battery voltage but it was around normal as radio and other stuff was working ok. But I will check it next time it happens.
Meanwhile while searching on the internet I've found that this might be the result of OBD-BT dongle and Torque dashboard app being connected.

I've analysed coincidences and indeed it seems happened only when OBD-BT dongle and Torque app was running on the phone. Im trying to rule this out now - means I leave dongle connected at all times and see if it happens. It doesn't happen always but seems it never happens when my dongle is out. Curious whether jonah was using anything OBD socket connected.

It occurred today again. I've deliberately left OBD-BT dongle connected overnight.
Funny enough after I shutdown the engine and disconnect the dongle and then (MANDATORY!) give it some mins, it has started all properly.
Fuel gauge works fine and other instrument cluster indicators too. So im rulling out bad grounding either bad batt voltage on the instrument cluster. Seems to be CAN comms issue as suspected on basis analysis of previous incidents and story.

checked the voltage this time and it was 14.35V so all good too!
