I have just bought a prop from eBay
£5.50
Got it shipped landed at my house next day
Pleasantly surprised it’s a gkn and as quiet spinning bearings
All looks good to me no play in the joints and it moves freely

what’s the best way if it’s not tight
when fitted to gauge the condition
Of the vcu

Put a couple of stout screwdrivers through the UJ yokes each end of the VCU, and see if you can turn the VCU slowly. If you can turn them slowly, the it's likely ok to fit, then do the 1 wheel up test as a double check.
What Nodge said.
You should be able to turn it as described. It won't be easy but should move.
If you can't make it budge even using all your strength then don't fit it until you have replaced or reconditioned the VCU.

Just tried to move it with screwdrivers and it moves like a strut with on spring attached holding one side and putting my weight on the other side but definitely moves ok

That's good news but be prepared to pull it off again immediately if the one wheel up test looks bad. The force you used is a fraction of the force required by the transmission to make it turn during slow speed maneuvering or if the tyres are not perfect. That's why Freelanders with dead transmissions are so common.
Do the one wheel up test as soon as you can. ;)
