Problems engaging gear - New Owner

Hi,

I've problems engaging gears, started to really notice this on Saturday, previous to this I thought it was just me not pushing the pedal in far enough.

Today however is a different story. The pedal has a lot of play 2"-3", it returns o.k. on the spring. Most of the time I can't get any gear although I can when pumped a few times, other times I can but only twice in succession i.e. into 1st (pull away) then into 2nd, then I'm struggling again.

I don't know if this Freelander has a hydraulic clutch or not (no Haynes manual yet) but I suspect a hydraulic problem.

What suggestions do you have?

Clutch I reckon chap. If you sit with the vehicle not running can you still get a smooth gear change without depressing the clutch ?.

If you can get it in gear by pumping the clutch, it sounds like a hydraulic clutch problem to me. Make sure the fluid level is topped up. Probably a master or slave cylinder leaking. Don't know about the Freelander, but normally quite an easy DIY job.
