Problem with swivels

Went about replacing the swivels on my 1963 Series 2A today as they are well past their best. They are the later type without the springs.

I seem to have a bit of a problem. I cannot get them to give enough resistance...they are just too loose. Workshop manual states that it should have 8lbs tension before they move...with one I get about 4lbs, and the other, well, there is not enough resistance for it to even measure.

I have removed all the shims...so in theory it should be really stiff but to no avail. Any ideas of what could have gone wrong here? The only thing I can think of is that the cast is a bit off and has the bearing set in too far. I could get a shim which would solve that I guess but would be useful to know if anyone else has had this problem.

A little brown hard fibre-ish (rialko?) disc, about the size of a 2p piece. You'll never get the pre load right without it.

there isnt on the later versions, don't think you can mix and match the early swivel housing with the late type bush
 
Won't get home far short of midnight, so can't check the parts book tonight, but I thought all rialko bushes had a thrust washer in them.
 
Cheers, appreciate you looking for me when you can. Could be of course the workshop manual makes the presumption that you know there should be a washer in there. The parts book should proove either way!
 
Thanks, I didn't like to say they had them on 90's as its six years since I got out of the parts business and my memory isn't always that good, but I thought they used them until they went to bearings top & bottom (around 300 time)
 
There is deffo no spacer in there!

Anyway, bought the bush from local land rover place and now it has tightened up a treat. Apparently the bush *should* have been in the kit. Lovely jubbly :)

completley renewed mine 2 weeks ago its a 1969 dont no if the year makes any difference mines a 1969 bushes came with the kit put them in got the right resistance hope thats some help
 
I have just renewed the swivels on my series today. I put the thrust washer in as it says in the destructions. The swivel was so darn tight, I could hardley move it. So i took it out and did away with it. It seems perfect now and there doesnt seem to be a problem?
 
Depends on your opinion of tight (not being rude!). It is best to set it up with one of those tools to check the tension as it's a good idea to get it roughly right.

You say it was too tight...did you remember to try adding more of the rectangular washers that go between the big bit with the 4 bolts? (I am sorry, I can take things apart, but as for names of things, no idea)...remembering that the more washers you have, the more movement it will have (the idea being as time goes on and it wears out, you can remove some of the washers to tighten up the swivel.
 
check the service manual for the correct measure as you need to add or remove the shims (what you call washers) as needed, they are differing thicknesses - you need a spring balance to do this correctly
 
Yer I added 1 big thick one and 3 thin ones.

My opinion of tight is it broke the scales. It says 16LB of pull you need before it should move. It was more like 30

Well if it wares out I can pop the top off and put in the thrust washer.

Also when the thrust washer was in the outer case sat really high and the seal wouldnt fit round the back?

I forgot to add, these are brit part swivel..........
