I've got an 1988 Jeep Cherokee that I can't get to start. When you turn the
key to "on", the fuel pump starts working, and it acts like it should. When
you switch it to "crank", nothing happens. You can hear the switch close at
the relay and the temp gauge goes all the way over like it had in the past,
but nothing cranks. I've replaced the starter, the starter relay, and I've
been able to start it once by crossing the starter with the switch on.
Anyone have any ideas about what might be wrong with it?

I had a GMC do that once, it was a burned fusible link. Mine was on the
firewall by the master cylinder, no idea where Jeep would put it.

You might have a look at some of the troubleshooting tips on my page, below:

Could be a burned fuse link wire or a worn out ignition switch.

The ignition switch is down at the bottom of the steering column. The
fuse link wires are on the power distribution box right at the end of
the smaller red battery cable.
