1999 L freelander series played up somthin chronic, marathon on starter motor to get it started , hot or cold , blowing white smoke every where whilst cranking over and partialy fireing on starter motor,eventual it might start befor battery was flat , after reading threads here and good old Haynes Manual,I went from one thing to next , ie glowplugs checked and ok , maf checked and ok not that it is much use on an l sereis as it only controlls the EGR on which mine is blanked off. Checked all sensor conections and ok, Try again and no good , checked fuel relay and ok , Nice buzzing sound from fuel injector pump , scratch head roll a smoke , then checked fuel side of things , pulled out fuel filter , filter ok but noticed that there was not much fuel in it so then suspected air in fuel system , as the L Series does not have a fuel pump in the rear tank as it is on the injector pump itself , it made it fairly easy to check fueles lines etc , primed system with hand pump near fuel filter and bled filter using the bleed screw on filter to discharge air, tried again to start motor and same **** , no go , Checked last piece of fuel hose on pipeing that connects to the fuel injector pump itself , it is only about 4 inches long and when took it off i noticed a small split open up when i bent it straight replaced that with a new piece , took off all the crappy spring clips and replaced with scew hose clamps , primed system again and bled air out at the filter and also out of the injecter pump itself , there is a nipple , looks like a brake bleed nipple just where the last piece of hose clamps to the fuel injector pump , in fact i used a brake bleed kit to do it , got all air out and gave it a go following the haynes manual for stating after working on fuel system and away she went , in fact it starts so well now that i then realised that it had been getting gradualy harder start over time but did not realise it .Hope this is off use to somone .
