My Disco 2 builds up pressue in the cooling system which causes it to vent through the pressure cap. I loose about 1 mil of coolant per mile in this way so, if I do 500 miles I loose half a litre. The obvious choice is head gasket but it doesn't show any of the signs you'd expect, no water in the oil, no emulsion in the rocker cover and I even had a test done for hydrocarbons in the rocker cover - result - zilch! It's not getting and worse but somehow it pressures itself up like an air pump. Any ideas chaps? Someone once mention the fuel heater?

Just for your info, normal forum etiquette would be to introduce yourself in the new member thread before asking for help.

Re your problem I would:

1. Ensure the coolant circuit is bled fully &

2. Replace the header tank cap.

IF these don't resolve the problem, then you'll need to dig deeper.

head gasket or cracked head, it needs the head removing and testing at an engine re-manufacturing place

like Dave said...before you get to hard and expensive things replace the tank's cap then make sure it's well tightened .... if the cap doesnt keep the 1.4 bar in there the coolant starts to make bubbles above 90*C or even boil at 100*C which will presurise the system and cause overflow(not uncommon for Td5 to work at this temp. on hard usage) ...maybe you're lucky to avoid what Johnlad said

In the end we had the head off and, surprise, surprise, head gasket. Skim-off and pressure test, all back together, no more probs. It seems quite common for TD 5s of a certain age.
