I have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0 I6 242. I have
plenty of power in town at sea level , but once I go above 2000 feet
and climb it starts to loose power and my top speed is between 60 and
65 mph. Also, it never fails, a fowl oder enters the cab, it does't
smell like exhaust or gas, but is chemical smelling. Has anyone else
had this problem?

I have changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, TPS and owygen sensor.
I am getting a code of 23 on my dash to replace the Intake Air
Temperature Sensor and I'm in the process of replacing it. Could it
be the problem? Or could the MAP sensor be bad?

Thanks, It's a JEEP....

Definitely not normal, mine actually seems to run better between
about 2000 and 3000, with top speeds in excess of "arrest me"
still available at well over 7000 on a freeway.

May be productive to figure out what kind of chemical smelling
it is...knock wood someone will recognize it.

I'd replace the intake temp sensor and try it, but if I had to
take a WAG, the MAP sensor would be high on the list of suspects.
Except that I have no clue what is causing the chemical smell.

Thanks, Lon. I replace the IAT this morning and it seems to run a
little smoother. I also checked the voltage going into my MAP from
the PCM and that was fine. Couldn't get a back probe into the plug
though, it was too tight. I'm going to replace the MAP just because
the truck has 129K on it and it is fairly inexpensive.

The chemical smell might be my EVAP purge control solenoid. It makes
a very loud clicking sound when the car is idling. Do you know if
this is normal? It sounds like it's working way to hard to clear the
EVAP canister.

And my Niner's aren't doing much better... 6-44... THANKS GARCIA!

Ya might want to run it up a hill to see if the temp sensor cured it,
with the MAP sensor being right on the top of the list of follow on
suspects.

No it isn't normal. I can't even hear mine cycle with the hood
open. The purge shouldn't start until the engine is fully up
to temp, then it should pretty much be more of a buzz, cycling
at 5-10 times per second. [from the FSM] You can try displaying
any codes by using the key onoff trick and watch the CHECK ENGINE
light for 32 or 31 [evap] The FSM is "highly informative" on
what controls the pulse width. Wonder if you have a plugged
cannister, or the MAP makes the PCM think it is.

As a friend noted, hang in there, "this too shall pass" as Garcia
sure the hell can't.
