For my first post on this forum I am seeking some advice...... it is possibly a bit of a numpty question but please forgive me I am a girl and more familiar with equines than mechanics (although I do own a haines manual and do try to do the more straight forward things) but I have a problem with my beloved disco that I just can't figure out.

I am occasionally getting a funny squeak when accelerating away. At the same time as the squeak sometimes my engine revs go a little high and I am not travelling any faster. At the moment this is predominanly when I am towing. ( Ifor william horsebox (905kg) & associated horsey loads (600 - 1200kg)

There is no smell and this problem isn't consistant. If I stick the car into 5th and then try to drive off it still stalls. If I hare up a hill (without the trailer) I just occasionally get the squeak.

I moved a horse a fortnight ago (only 5 miles and up a big hill) and I got the squeak and extra revs (but no extra speed). This continued afterwards for about 5 miles of "OMG I am late" driving. Last weekend I was towing and all I got was the squeak but no extra revs. Normal day to day driving there is nothing not a squeak or extra quiver on the rev counter. The gear changes are as they always have and I haven't noticed a problem with the clutch pedal.

it has been suggested that it is the clutch, is this the case or could it be something else.

I guess I am asking the question so that I am a little more knowledgable when I have to go to talk to the garage.

sounds like it mite be clutch slip - have you tried doing a hill start on a nice steep hill?

I think i know your mate, Custard.

:welcome: to the Looneyzone
I hope you have a thick skin as we tend to not take prisoners.

Have to admit that I haven't tried a hill start.

Hum.... if it is the start of the clutch slipping then I guess it is a nice expensive visit to the garage. I just haven't got the facilities, the strength or the manpower to do this one.

I suppose it is better to get it done now that leave it and it goes leaving me stranded with equines in tow

dont be like that - the full kit is less than a ton, that's if you do everything (release bearing, arm, seals etc) - it'll cost you the best part of 450 quid for a garage to do it

find a few non spanner shy mates, buy a few slabs of beer and invite them round for a clutch change party

Which Discovery?

When my 300 Tdi squeaked a lot it was the belt, upon which I use graphits powder for a while .. when the squeak got to a clanging and revs going haywire it was the alternator! So it might be worth changing the serpentine belt for the few quid it costs, and is a job you should be able to do single-handedly.

Well, you'lll need both your hands, but on your own. ;)

Well, you could get help as well, if you felt like.

..or not .. ;)

Where, roughly (town only) are you? Someone might be able to listen and/or help a bit more.

the squeak is a metallic "eek" squeak.... which is why I didn't think it could be a belt
