its deffinatly comming from the head gasket area you can just see the bottom of the exhaust manifold in the picture gonna clean it up tomorrow and monitor i have no mixing of oil/water or any of the usual symptoms i do have a slight ticking/cam noise i will carry out a compression test all plugs look good iv done a sniff test all good it could just be old oil build up from leaking rocker/valley gaskets or something more sinister :rolleyes::rolleyes: just odd its clean on top and oily below gasket level

well i think iv answerd my own question my engine oil is glowing under the black light, i added fluro dye to my cooling system a while back looking for a leak i have had problems with rad top hoses n clips etc i dont have any other normal symptoms of hg failure so unless my valley gasket is leaking coolant slightly, unlikley then it looks like its hg or slipped liner, time to pull the heads n have a look see

fluro dye its great stuff :(:(:(

Dave, you'll find the HG replacement a cake walk. though what i would suggest is soak the manifold bolts in release oil for a few days before..

oh and pre order the manifold to cat bolts and studs and manifold bolts too

I dont know about petrol engines but my diesel leaks from the Oil cooler O rings and has to be replaced quite regulary.

cheers adam i was hoping to not have to unbolt the cats but i see where your comming from, hg kit arrived today just sorting out a decent place to get the heads skimmed a mate has a couple of heads sitting on the shelf at his work shop all refurbed n ready to go just waiting to see how much he wants for them so i can decide if i do a straight swop or not as for the manifold bolts didnt think of those, i should know better i replaced an exhaust on one of my bike n 2 studs broke off i has to drill them out and helicoil them.

so far i checked the heat sheild bolts and they all apart from 1 undo that 1 didnt shift at all and rounded off very easily, bugger

i mite start a new thread on head gasket and post reports and photos as there isnt any recent write ups on here i could find on search

Hi Dave, if you google PaulP38.com he has some interesting stuff on his website, he has done the head gaskets on his V8 with a complete write up and pictures to boot.
Hope this helps.
Paul
