Hi all. This is my 1st post on this forum, so hopefully i get a good response and someone can stop me having the Freelander crushed :( :confused:

I bought a Freelander 2006 Mk1, and to start with there was no noise. Overnight, it suddenly started making a banging noise on when braking at slow speeds. The noise is much worse when reversing on full lock. When reversing on lock, the brakes need not be applied for the knock to happen, but when the brakes are applied, the knock is at its worst. Heres what ive tried so far....

Checked the brake pads for movement
Removed the propshaft to rule out rear diff mounts or VCU
Checked the driveshafts for movement. There is movement, but nothing drastic.

Other things i've found are;

When inside the car the noise seems to come from the front right area. From outside it more sounds like the centre.

The lower engine stabiliser that bolts to the gearbox/transfer box, has quite a bit of play.

If i jack up the driver side, put the car in gear, and turn the wheel back and forward, the engine moves a whole lot, particularly at the lower stabiliser (with it just being a stabiliser and not a mount, im unsure of how much it should move?)

Ive had this to a garage and also had another mechanic, plus myself, go over the freelander, and i still have no idea. My thoughts were the lower mount or maybe a driveshaft?

Any ideas would be VERY gratefully received as this is doing my head in.

Cheers

pop and introduce your self as said ,its polite:) now have you checked lower rubber joints ,springs engine mounts ,prop bearings hope this helps :)

^^^ Done :)

Yeah ive checked all of the above mate. Like i said i even removed the propshaft to rule out anything from there back. Its proving to be an absolute nightmare :(

if you think it Might be from the back :
check the rear diff. mounts ..
and the rear subframe mounting bolts ..

~~~~~~~~~
i'd get that lower engine stabilizer whatsit fixed ..
i don't think it's neither expensive or a complicated fix ..
Thanks for the reply
No no i know its not coming from the back. Its definitely the front. Off to another garage tomorrow, one with a pit. The plan is the mechanic will stand in the pit and ill roll forward and back over him hoping the knock happens (would be just typical if it didnt :rolleyes: )
where did you buy it from if a garage take it back ,the engine should not move that much I would take a closer look .also check the wishbones
Either tighten or replace the lower engine stabiliser bar. Happily not a big job.
