Hi,

I really hope someone can help. I have a 98 petrol freelander, around 7mths ago it started cuttiing out after around a 20 min journey but starts again after a few mins. Once it starts cutting out in the day it will continue to do it every 5 or so mins, I have left it during the day for 8 hours but will cut out again after 5 or so mins. The only time it will completely cool down for a good 20min journey is if I leave it over night.

I have had the fuel pump, cranshaft sensor, spark plugs and temp switch replaced by 2 different garges who have both taken my money but not fixed the problem. It is in with another garage who have had it for 2 days and still nothing.

I have low mileage and love the car but is due for an mot soon and if these guys cant fix it im going to have to get rid of it:mad:

Does any one have any idea pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase???

so it def sounds like its when its warmed up to temp.
belt or waterpump ?
i had a similar thing...it didn't cut out but would start warn me and go into limp mode.
in my case the vanes on the water pump were solid on the shaft when it was cold...but when it was warm they would slip and not pump and it would over heat..warning lights and no power getting slower and slower.
then i'd leave it for 5 mins and it'd go again for 5 mins.

i know you said you had them replaced but
also i seem to recall there is more than one water temp sensor.
at least 2..perhaps 3

im sure someone more in the know than me can confirm that.

yeah, it went through the roof !
i nearly crapped myself thinking it was about to go pop.
i had never seen it move above the mid point until then. (or since)
it was lying though.

the AA man refused to believe me first of all,
as i couldnt get it to go into the red again while stationary even at high revs for 20 mins.
..only while in motion.

so once i got it to over heat again i quickly pulledover, stopped, popped the bonnet and he had a laserpointer/no contact thermometer pointing at the water hoses at various points and none of them were high. (about 80deg C i think from memory)

he even had me carry on with it in the red.....so a good few miles.
gradually getting slower and slower with less power
but it didnt get any hotter according to his laser thermometer.
until he finally admitted defeat and towed me home.

but obviously...somewhere in there... near one of the sensors
it was hot enough to make the gauge move.

anyway, after replacing the pump last october it has been fine.
