Hi all, Sorry for the desperate Title, but desperate is how i feel. I bought my wife a Freelander 1.8GS Petrol on a 51 plate last month.
I did it quite rashly as it was a last minute decision to surprise her.
I ended up paying £3000.00, and now I look everywhere on the net i see them for £1400.00 upwards.
Anyway, I accepted that i was a wally and should of researched more, but now Im starting to get problems:

1. Really, really, really slow to pick up speed after 50mph.
2. Hill descent and TC light keep coming on.
3. Most worrying of all, I am having to top the water up in the expansion tank every other day.

I'm hearing that it may be the head gasket, and possibly the engine itself. I am so gutted and worried I may have totally wasted my savings.

Please can anybody who may know anything about what I've mentioned advise on costs, seriousness and if its worth getting it sorted or scrap it and kiss my money goodbye.:confused::mad::confused::confused::violent::rolly:
Thankyou all for your anticipated help.

Paul

Mad Hat, I bought it from a small trader, he had maybe 30 cars for sale in his compound, but it wasnt a proper main dealer with a front. Am i still covered???

Yes I'd recommend phoning "consumer direct" although you may not be able to reject the car you would be able to force the trader to fix it

Consumer Direct

Thank you all for your advice. I am going to press for a refund. Fingers crossed.
Huge lesson learnt!!

Before tackling the dealer, I know it can be hard to wait-but phone consumer direct first.

I've phoned them once for myself and once on behalf of someone else-both times they have been both faster and more effective than "Citizens Advice"

Thanks Fanatic, Just phoned but have to wait til Tuesday now. I dont mind waiting, at least I have hope!!!

If you don't get a refund from the trader then he has to put any faults right. When done, sell it (probably for a loss), then get a diesel. The old l-series are good and you should get one for about £1000 to £1500. So if you only get £2000 for the petrol atleast you'll end up with a better freelander.
